Groups & Committees
Among the aims set forth in our congregational mission statement is the goal of "ministering to the needs of "residents in the community and promoting peace and justice in the world." First Presbyterian Church supports both local and world-wide missions. Toward those ends, we provide various kinds of support at home and abroad.
Our goal is to devote a tithe (10%) of our income received from pledges, along with other expressions of partnership and support, to these and other mission and outreach projects.
Louisville Presbyterian Theological Seminary (www.lpts.edu) trains women and men, both in the classroom and on the job to serve Jesus Christ in ministry. In addition to our financial support, we provide hands-on training for seminarians through participation in the field eduction program.
Camp Pyoca's (www.camppyoca.org) summer camping program and other programming give children and youth the opportunity to learn about God's love, the stewardship of God's creation, and living in Christan community. We support Camp Pyoca financially and through our members' participation in the Summer Work Camp.
Youth Mission Trips are taken annually by the youth of First Prez. In 2006, 2007, and 2009, and 2011 our youth traveled to New Orleans helping with the cleanup effort after Hurricane Katrina. In 2008 our youth assisted with home repairs in Chattanooga, TN., and later that summer our youth and adults traveled to Iowa to help with flood clean up. Our youth mission groups typically serve with Son Servants and/or the Center for Student Missions.
In 2009 and 2010, adults from First Presbyterian Church in Jeffersonville joined other Southern Indiana congregations for mission trips to the Gulf Coast serving thr the Presbyterian Disaster Assistance program.
Hope Chest provides support for local missions by collecting items provided by members of our congregation along with financial support. A different group is supported each month. Needed supplies and the organization being supported can be found listed on our homepage.
Haiti is our major foreign mission area. We provide financial support to help rebuild a country that has been devastated by earthquakes and hurricanes. We seek advice on projects through one of our former student pastors who is a missionary in Haiti.
